Meaning & Wisdom of Hajj
Understanding the fifth pillar of Islam
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. It is performed during the month of Dzulhijjah, with specific rituals spread across five sacred days (8-12 Dzulhijjah) at Mina, Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Masjid al-Haram.
menu_book Qur'anic Evidence
"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
Surah Ali 'Imran, 3:97
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Take your Hajj rituals from me." Every step of Hajj — the places, the timings, the words — traces back to how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed his Farewell Hajj. Following his example ensures our worship is accepted.
format_quote Authentic Hadith
"Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not commit any obscenity or transgression will return as pure as the day his mother gave birth to him."
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1521 | Sahih Muslim, no. 1350

4 Required Pillars of Hajj
route Your Sacred Journey
Preparation Before Hajj
Comprehensive preparation — physical, documents, spiritual, and Sunnah
1. Intention & Sincerity
Intention is the resolve of the heart to perform an act of worship purely for Allah. For Hajj — a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for those able — sincerity is the foundation upon which everything else rests.
format_quote Authentic Hadith
"Verily, deeds are by intentions, and every person will have what they intended."
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1 | Sahih Muslim, no. 1907
✓ Renew your intention before beginning the journey
✓ Ensure your intention is solely to seek Allah's pleasure
✓ Avoid showing off — Hajj is not a status symbol
2. Important Documents & Essentials
Prepare all documents and essentials before departure. Check each item off the list.
- checkPassport & Hajj Visa (ensure approved & valid 6+ months)
- checkMeningitis vaccination certificate (required for Hajj visa)
- checkFlight Tickets (keep digital & physical copies)
- checkIhram cloth — Men: 2 pieces (plus a spare); Women: modest covering
- checkTour operator ID card & mutawwif contact
- checkMoney belt, wallet & credit card (for emergencies)
- checkMedications (paracetamol, cold medicine, moisturizer, prescription meds)
- checkWorship kit: small Qur'an, dua book, travel prayer mat
- checkIttar (alcohol-free perfume — use before ihram only)
- checkNon-fragrance soap (for use during ihram)
- checkFlip-flops / sandals (no stitched footwear during ihram for men)
- checkSmall drawstring bags for collecting pebbles at Muzdalifah
- checkUmbrella & small fan (for the heat during Arafah)
- checkTorch/flashlight (useful at Muzdalifah)
menu_book Qur'anic Evidence
"And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is righteousness."
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:197
3. Health & Safety Tips
format_quote Authentic Hadith
"Indeed, your body has a right over you."
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5199
4. Spiritual Preparation
"And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you may succeed."
Surah An-Nur, 24:31
"Whoever severs ties of kinship will not enter Paradise."
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5984 | Sahih Muslim, no. 2556
5. Sunnah Practices Before Departure
The day before departure: clip your nails, trim your moustache, and clean your hair. On the day of ihram, perform ghusl (full ritual bath). For men, apply perfume to the body (not to the ihram cloth) before making the intention.
"The Prophet ﷺ bathed when he intended to enter ihram, applied perfume, and I could see the shine of the perfume on his head even after he had entered ihram."
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1539 | Sahih Muslim, no. 1189
Pray 2 rakaats nafl at home before leaving. Recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakaat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. Make abundant dua for ease, forgiveness, and acceptance.
"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to set out on a journey, he would pray two rakaats in the mosque."
Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 1417
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
"Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have done it ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will return."
Give sadaqah generously before leaving. Charity purifies wealth and brings protection on the journey.
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed that grows seven ears..."
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261
Three Types of Hajj
Choose the type that matches your travel plan — most Malaysians perform Tamattu'
Ihram & Miqat
The first required pillar — entering the sacred state for Hajj
Ihram comes from the Arabic harama — to make sacred or forbidden. In Hajj, ihram refers to the sacred state entered through intention at the miqat, marked by specific clothing and a set of prohibitions that remain until tahallul.
The Miqat Boundaries
A pilgrim must not cross these boundaries toward Makkah without being in ihram.
💡 For Tamattu' pilgrims: You enter ihram for Umrah at the miqat above. For the Hajj portion on 8 Dzulhijjah, the miqat is your accommodation in Makkah.
How to Wear Ihram
- checkRida' — upper sheet draped over both shoulders
- checkIzar — lower sheet wrapped around the waist to below the knees
- closeNo stitched clothing, no head covering, no closed footwear
- checkModest clothing covering the entire body except face and hands
- closeNo niqab (face veil) and no gloves while in ihram

Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik laa syarika laka labbaik. Innal hamda wanni'mata laka wal mulk, laa syarika laka.
"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner."
The 5 Days of Hajj
Step-by-step through every day of Hajj, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
"The Prophet ﷺ prayed Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr in Mina, then waited until sunrise before proceeding to Arafah."
Sahih Muslim, no. 1218
"Hajj is Arafah. Whoever reaches Arafah before the dawn of the 10th has made Hajj."
Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 889
The Best Dua of Arafah
"There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things capable."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah, and the best thing I and the Prophets before me have said is this..." (al-Tirmidhi, no. 3585)
⚠️ Critical: You must be within the boundaries of Arafah for any period of time between Zawaal (9 Dzulhijjah) and Fajr (10 Dzulhijjah). Missing this invalidates your Hajj.
"So when you depart from Arafah, remember Allah at al-Mash'ar al-Haram."
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:198
💡 Recommended order: Rami → Qurban → Shave → Tawaf Ifadah. However, if you change the order by mistake, there is no penalty according to the Sunnah.
Tawaf Al-Ifadah
7 circuits around the Kaaba — the main Tawaf of HajjTawaf Al-Ifadah is the pillar of Hajj without which Hajj is not complete. It is performed after Arafah, starting from 10 Dzulhijjah (or any time until the end of Dzulhijjah). Start at the corner of Hajar al-Aswad and circle the Kaaba 7 times counter-clockwise, with the Kaaba on your left.
"Then let them complete their prescribed duties and fulfil their vows and perform tawaf around the ancient House."
Surah Al-Hajj, 22:29
How to Perform Tawaf
- Make wudu. Men: perform idtiba' (rida' under right armpit, over left shoulder) — only for this tawaf.
- Stand facing Hajar al-Aswad. Raise your hand toward it and say: "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar." Do not push — if you cannot touch or kiss it, a gesture is enough.
- Keep the Kaaba on your left. Walk around it 7 complete times.
- Men perform raml (brisk walking) in the first 3 circuits. Walk normally for the last 4.
- At Rukn al-Yamani (the corner before Hajar al-Aswad): touch it with your right hand if possible. Do not kiss or point.
- Between Rukn al-Yamani and Hajar al-Aswad: recite "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah..."
- Each circuit ends back at Hajar al-Aswad. After the 7th, pray 2 rakaats behind Maqam Ibrahim (or anywhere else).
- Drink Zamzam. Touch the Multazam (between the door and Hajar al-Aswad) and make dua, if possible.
Sa'i between Safa & Marwah
7 trips — commemorating Hajar's search for waterSa'i is the fourth pillar. Tamattu' pilgrims perform it twice — once during Umrah before 8 Dzulhijjah, and again after Tawaf Ifadah. Ifrad and Qiran pilgrims perform sa'i only once, either after Tawaf Qudum (arrival tawaf) or after Tawaf Ifadah.
"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah."
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:158
How to Perform Sa'i
- Start at Safa. Climb up, face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and recite the verse Safa-Marwah (2:158).
- Say "Allahu Akbar" 3 times, then make personal dua. Do this at the start of each of the 7 trips.
- Walk toward Marwah. When you reach the green lights, men should jog/run. Women walk normally.
- After the second green light, walk normally again until you reach Marwah.
- At Marwah: face the Kaaba, say "Allahu Akbar" 3 times, make dua.
- Safa → Marwah = 1 trip. Marwah → Safa = 2 trips. Continue until 7 trips — ending at Marwah.
- After the 7th trip, make final dua. Sa'i is complete.
Dua during Sa'i
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ، وَأَنْتَ الْأَعَزُّ الْأَكْرَمُ
Rabbighfir warham, wa anta al-A'azzu al-Akram.
"My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous."
"And remember Allah during specific numbered days. Whoever hurries in two days — no sin upon him; whoever delays — no sin upon him, for him who fears Allah."
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:203
"No one should leave until his last act is at the House."
Sahih Muslim, no. 1328
💡 Exception: Women in menstruation are exempt from Tawaf al-Wada' and may depart without it.

Etiquette & Dua
Maintaining adab and heart presence throughout Hajj
Etiquette in the Holy Land
Renew your intention at each ritual. Seek only Allah's pleasure, not worldly recognition.
The Haramayn are sacred. Guard physical and spiritual cleanliness — the heart as much as the body.
Avoid pushing during tawaf, sa'i, and especially rami. Never injure a fellow pilgrim for a "better" spot.
Avoid idle talk, laughter, or worldly gossip. Fill silence with dhikr and Qur'an.

The first mosque built in IslamFounded by the Prophet ﷺ on his arrival in Madinah. He ﷺ said that praying two rakaats here equals the reward of an Umrah.
Practical Tips
Careful planning for a smooth and accepted Hajj
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Physical & Emotional Challenges
Drink Zamzam frequently. Carry a small bottle. Oral rehydration salts are useful during Arafah heat.
Rest strategically — before Arafah, before Tawaf Ifadah, and between rami on 11-12 Dzulhijjah.
Blisters are the #1 Hajj injury. Wear your sandals for weeks before. Carry antiseptic & plasters.
You may cry. You may feel frustrated. Take a quiet moment, breathe, return to dhikr. Allah sees your effort.
